All the descriptions I ever read on Pekanbaru are horrible. Every one says that it's dirty and that there is nothing to see. Well I'm doing this to set the record strait. Pekanbaru is dirty, but so what!!! It is a nice city, I lived there for 3 months a few years ago. I never meet nicer people than there. After a few weeks, I found myself smilling for no reason. Everyone is constantly smilling there, even those who are incredebly poor.

Favourite spots: |
I was a little too young to have a favorite spot, but if I had to pick something it would be the little restaurant we eat at every day for 3 months. Singalang was the name, the people that opened it came from the Indonesian region Singalang. It was the best food I ever tasted to this day. Again people could say that It was dirty, I agree, but the plates and the tables where always clean, it was just the kitchen that was half outdoors! But I never got sick once. They served your food in little plates. Serving of every thing, weather you asked for it or not. They would serve let say two curry eggs, two fried chicken legs, a bit of vegetable (cooked, they don't serve fresh vegetables) etc... and you would choose what you wanted, put it in your own plate, and the rest? Well it would go back with the main plates of food in the window. Don't cringe, they didn't touch the food that you eat, only what was left in the small plates. A least they didn't waste any food !

What's really great: |
I never meet nicer people. Always a smile on their face and always something nice to say. There the time did not exist, nobody was rushed to go anywhere. That is what I liked about Pekanbaru

Sights: |
Sights? Well just find a nice rice field to look at. It won't be hard to find, and they are breathtaking.

|
Accommodations: |
Hostels are the best choice, ther is some preatty much every where.

I love your writing style and your traveler's attitude - so what if it's dirty! If you don't get sick, what does it really matter? You connect with the local people and respect their customs, that's admirable! |
