Ruins of Russian Fort Elizabeth
|
|
Explorer Captain James Cook has discovered this paradise island on January the 20, 1778.Then after his discovery many other nationalities such as: Germans, Russians, Portugese Spanish-from Europe, and Filipinos, Japanece and Chinese from the Orient had settled on the Island. Before-approximately about a thousand years ago Polynesian travelers in dig-out canoes for the search of better life had discovered the Island and settled there on the shores of Wailua River. And even before Polynesians, a race of 2-foot tall magical people lived on the island for many thousand of years. Russians for example had established three forts on the island –FORT ELIZABETH, FORT HIPO, and FORT ALEXANDER. They have been presented on the Island from 1816-1864.The Russian-American Company-a “trading post” was operating on the Island. Historical Fort Elizabeth was constructed at the mouth of Wailua River from lava rocks-right now in ruins. Numerous motion picture productions has been made on the Island.

Favourite spots: |
The island has some of the most secluded and pristine beaches in the Hawaiian Islands. We had stayed at Kauai’s North Shore- at the small plantations city Kapaa. It still has small-town appeal with local shops, restaurants, and shopping center. The city of Kapaa has several beaches where locals as well as visitors can swim , snorkel or simply enjoy islands scenic wonders. By the way Island of Kauai is the wettest spot on Earth. Mount Wai’ale’ale-located just about at the center of the island has 460 inches of rainfall per year, with its own swamp-The Alakai Swamp. The island has more miles of sandy beaches around its 110-mile coastline then any other Hawaiian island. Wonderdul, magnificent and picturesque waterfalls such as Wailua Falls-near by Wailua town is a must to see. This fall ponders its powerful two cataracts from the 80-foot tall cliff. This fall was used for a TV’s show “Fantasy Island”. Visiting Waimea Canyon was a present for us, but unfortunately we did not see much.

What's really great: |
The island has basically one main road-Kuhio Highway, that gets very busy in the morning commute hours, but taking this road to the north’s – very lushly tropical part of the island is a must. At Lydgate Park snorkeling at rock-protected lagoon is the best for all ages-waters are very calm and brilliantly transparent for reef life exploration. The reef is abundant with all kinds of brightly, multicolored reef life from parrotfish, trigger fish and spotted moray eels to sea urchins and vividly colored sponge mollusk and sea worms. Advise-be careful not to be encountered, while in the water, by a jelly fish called-“The Man of War”-one small jelly can sting with the power of 10 bees-could be fatal! Usually there is a warning signs on the beach,” Man of War” can be present in one part of the ocean, but completely absent at the other ,so you know ,what to do. Stop on the way at small, quaint former sugar plantation town-Kilauea.
