La Paz is a truly breathtaking city! The descent over the rim of the crater and down into the city is spectacular. Throw in the beautiful blue skies, add the high altitude, stir in the steep streets and you have a very lightheaded mix!

Favourite spots: |
We just enjoyed wandering around the city mixing with the locals. Although it is worth taking a taxi out to the Mercado Negro or black market as it is known. You can pick up just about anything you want and probably many things you don't need! Levis cost about $11US, playstation games and cds, very cheap although I am sure also pirated.

What's really great: |
We really enjoyed the blue skies and almost balmy weather. We also found the locals to be really friendly and not as pushy as in neighbouring Peru.

Accommodations: |
We stayed at The Hostal Maya-Sasquerema on the street by the same name. There are plenty of hotels located along this street but we found that this one offered the best value for the money. It is located at the end of an arcade. There is also a pena(a nightclub with traditional music)in the same building but it finishes early enough that it dosen't disturb your sleep.
We also found a fantastic little hotel on our last day that if we were staying longer we would have moved to. It was called Hotel Arcabucero Hostal Inn on Calle Viluyo, number 307. It featured large cosy rooms with communal sitting rooms,in each of the rooms the ceilings featured the delicately moulded ceiling roses and the bathrooms were beautifully tiled with non-electric showers, a rarity. It was also very reasonable.

Restaurants: |
Roman Palace located on Calle Santa Cruz number 266a is a nice little restaurant with mellow music,a cosy atmosphere and a fresh flower on every table. They have Italian meals with wood fired pizzas. The pizza is the most original that we have tried as it came made up with a can of fruit salad due to the lack of fresh fruit but it was still delicious. The other recommendation would be L'Aqua Bar and restaurant at the corner of Saganaga and Linares. It has a reputation amonst travellers as being the place to go to listen to live local music, although not cheap and aimed at gringos all meals include a full salad bar, a rarity here so that in itself makes it good value. Check out the old silver sacks on the walls they make an original form of decoration.
