This is the main tourist area of Bali. Although it is not my favourite part of the island you still need to spend some time here in the least for the shopping. Many tourists never leave this area their entire holiday.

Favourite spots: |
I prefer the Legian end to the Kuta end. It is more upmarket as is the shopping. There are many large hotels that are self contained but I still prefer to get out and soak up the atmosphere. Even if this means battling hundreds of watch sellers with names like Elvis, but its all part of the fun.

What's really great: |
You can pick up some beautiful handicrafts to take home and not the normal touristy bits neither. Anything leather is reasonable including shoes, bags and jackets. Bargain as hard as you can but remember to not take it too seriously.

Accommodations: |
Bali Padma Hotel in Legian is my favourite place to stay. It is centrally located on the beach front. It has a fantastic pool area. The deluxe chalets are worth the extra money, they are larger, decorated in traditional Balinese style and look out onto the beautiful gardens. Much better than the boxy smaller standard rooms. The day spa offers great massages to unwind. The petite ladies might look tiny but they have hands of steel.

|
Restaurants: |
Poco Loco Mexican makes a nice change from Balinese food with a large menu. The restaurant has a great atmoshere and staff are entertaining, getting into their own cocktail style act. Gosha Bar and Restaurant is another great spot to pick your fresh fish and seafood and have it cooked your style with any sauce on the big grill plates as you walk into the restaurant.

|
Other recommendations: |
Jimbaran Bay - there is nothing like sitting with your feet in the sand with a cold drink in front of you watching the sun go down while waiting for your choice of fresh seafood being barbecued on an open fire.

And here I am commenting on yet another one of your trip reports. Hugely informative again. And as a bonus, I think I've found the hotel I want to stay at! That Padma Hotel is it! I checked out their site: http://www.hotelpadma.com/accomodation/acco_dx_cha.php and as you suggested, the deluxe chalet seems to be exactly what I want! Thanks for posting. My trip isn't for a few months, but just reading these reports is starting to get me in travel mode!! |
