Korfball in Pretoria

  7 votes

In july 2001 the world championship korfball for teams under 23 was held in Pretoria. As I am from the Netherlands, the leading country when talking korfball, we decided to follow the national team and compete in a tournament also in Pretoria. Pretoria was a very nice city with friendly people who were willing to show us around. The month of july means winter in South Africa. That means that the temperatures at night were almost freezing but during daylight they went up to a very nice level. The tournament we competed in was an outdoor tournament so this was very nice. Althoug we played one match at 8 in the morning, when the grass was still full of ice. We competed with a Dutch team against South African teams from all over the country. The level of play in South Africa was different than in Holland because korfball is only played there for like 5 years. We had great fun there and got to know a lot of people.

Favourite spots:
We stayed in Hotel 224 along with all the competing teams there. It was a very nice Hotel. During the day we spent most of our time at the sports center of the University of Pretoria, that was very nice located in the woods. Pretoria is called Jacaranda city due to the Jacaranda trees. Pretoria also has a nice shopping mall. We also went to the Voortrekkers museum, there you can study the history of the old South Africans. From there you had a beautiful vieuw of the city.

What's really great:
The thing I liked mostly there were the friendly South African people at the hotel and of the South African korfball clubs. The Voortrekkers museum was very beautiful with a great vieuw of the city.
