The temple building, which features some decorative relief work similar to that which appears on the walls of the Angkor Wat temple.
Not wanting to go empty-handed for my unannounced wandering around, prior to arriving at the temple I stopped off at Battambang Cambodian Grocery (1091B McCreery Avenue, San Jose; cross-street Story Road) to pick up something to be offerred to the monks for the following day's morning meal. The Cambodian woman behind the counter suggested that the monks would like the banana leaf-wrapped steamed sticky rice with red bean and a traditional bright orange sugary confection. Two women in front of the market were eating what appeared to be papaya salad, which the market makes and sells for $5. It is traditional Cambodian style, and includes pickled crab in addition to fermented shimp paste, thick and light fish sauce, aromatic basil and lots of chili; very spicy and pungent, but also very good!
